Parking in Madrid: SER zones, parking lots and practical tips

Getting around Madrid by car is convenient, but parking has its rules. If you're going to rent a car in MadridThis guide will save you fines and headaches.

The Regulated Parking Service (SER)

Much of central Madrid is within the SER zone, a paid parking area with regulated hours. It is mainly divided into two colors:

Blue zone

Designed for short-term parking (typically a maximum of 2-4 hours). It's the most practical option for quick errands.

Green area

Priority is given to residents; for non-residents, the duration is more limited and the fare is slightly higher. Ideal only for short stops.

Schedules and payment

The regulated parking system (SER) is usually in effect from Monday to Friday and on Saturday mornings, with a break at midday in some areas. Parking is free in August and on public holidays. You can pay at the parking meter or, more conveniently, through official parking apps, which also notify you when your time is up.

Parking lots and park-and-ride facilities

If you're going to be there for several hours, an underground parking garage is usually worthwhile. And if you're staying on the outskirts, park-and-ride facilities near metro and commuter rail stations allow you to leave your car and enter the city center by public transport.

Tips to avoid surprises

  • Always check the color of the line and the street signage.
  • Keep in mind the Low Emission Zone if you go into the center.
  • For longer stays, consider renting with home deliveryWe'll leave the car wherever you need it, saving you the trouble of looking for a parking spot.
